Hire Score is recruiting a President & COO for a high‑growth, founder‑led construction materials and services organization entering an exciting phase of accelerated growth. This onsite leadership role, based in Greater Sacramento HQ, is an opportunity to shape the future of the business and drive transformative growth. If you're in the region or were considering relocation for a career‑defining opportunity, we encourage you to apply.
**The opportunity**
This is a hands-on, "run-the-business" President & COO role for an operator who can scale the business over the next five years through organic growth and acquisition integration. The Founder is exceptional at sourcing and closing M&A deals. Your mandate is to turn operational execution into a compounding advantage while partnering with the Founder with real authority and autonomy.
What makes this opportunity exciting:
**True #2 with real authority:** This is not a support role---you run the operating engine driving the organic growth while the Founder focuses on deal‑making, with founder dependency intentionally and rapidly declining.
**Build and own the execution system:** Full mandate to design and scale the platform's operating backbone across fleet, yards/materials operations, projects, KPIs, and acquisition integration---turning execution into a durable competitive advantage.
**Well funded growth with complexity and upside:** A $40M platform backed to double its revenue via organic growth and tuck‑in acquisitions in the next 5 years, offering real levers to improve margins, predictability, and returns.
**High‑trust, high‑velocity partnership:** Direct access to the Founder, fast decisions, low bureaucracy, and clear accountability---designed for operators who move quickly and deliver results.
**Meaningful economic participation:** Competitive cash compensation plus direct participation in the value you create, tied to post‑start valuation growth---not just annual incentives.
**Key responsibilities**
Operational leadership (day-to-day excellence)
* Lead the GMs/superintendents/dispatch/project leaders across the operating companies; establish a weekly operating cadence and accountability.
* Drive fleet uptime and utilization: maintenance discipline, replacement planning, downtime reduction, and shop performance.
* Optimize aggregates sourcing and distribution: supplier relationships and pricing, inventory at yards/stockpiles, loadout and ticketing accuracy, quality/material compliance, and tight coordination with dispatch and project teams.
* Strengthen project execution (GC and sub): estimating handoff, job cost control, change orders, scheduling, and closeout discipline.
* Establish non-negotiables around safety and compliance (DOT, Cal/OSHA, state DOT requirements, and documentation rigor).
Financial and operating system rigor
* Own the operating rhythm: KPI dashboards, variance reviews, corrective actions, and forecast accuracy.
* Improve unit economics: cost per ton, cost per mile, on-time performance, labor productivity, and gross margin by job/customer.
* Partner with finance on cash discipline: working capital, receivables, claim/change-order timing, and capex prioritization.
Scale and integration (five-year growth plan)
* Build and run the integration playbook for acquisitions: people, systems, safety, equipment, customers, and culture --- without disrupting operations.
* Identify operational bottlenecks that limit growth and build the plan (people, equipment, process, systems) to remove them.
* Professionalize the leadership bench: succession plans, hiring, training, and performance management.
* Complement the Founder's acquisition strengths with relentless operational focus and predictable execution.
**Ideal background**
The strongest candidates combine operations leadership with financial discipline and have proven they can grow and scale in a founder-led, privately owned environment (without relying on large-company infrastructure).
* Senior operator who has run a P&L in construction materials, aggregates, heavy civil, and/or trucking --- ideally in the Western U.S.
* Proven track record taking a business through a meaningful step-change in scale (new capacity, new contract types, new markets, and/or acquisitions) as CEO/President or as the next-in-line operator owning execution.
* Experience operating in environments where you are both prime/GC and subcontractor; understands how each side wins commercially and operationally.
* Strong finance and operations blend: can "see the business in the numbers" and translate analysis into field execution.
* Track record improving safety, uptime, productivity, and margins in equipment-intensive operations.
* Credibility with field teams (supers, drivers, mechanics, plant teams) while also strong with customers, partners, and sophisticated owners.
**Leadership attributes we are looking for**
* High ownership and high standards; calm under pressure; makes hard calls with good judgment.
* Builds disciplined systems (cadence, KPIs, accountability) without over-bureaucratizing.
* Direct, transparent communicator --- no surprises.
* Team builder who develops leaders and creates pride in execution.
* Bias to action with strong risk management.
